November 2003 at the Market:
200 Years of Saturday Markets!
On November 5, 1803, Peter Hunter, Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, established the St. Lawrence Farmers' Market on the north-west corner of Front and Jarvis Streets in the former Town of York as a weekly market.
It is one of the longest continuously operating Farmers' Markets in North America: farmers have been selling their produce at this location every Saturday for the past 199 years.
Read more about the Market's long and varied history in History of the Market.
