May 2004 at the Market:
May 29-30, various times
St. Lawrence Hall, The Market Gallery, South Market
DOORS OPEN TORONTO is a FREE weekend celebration of Toronto's architectural heritage. Over 100 of Toronto's most historic and/or architecturally significant buildings open their doors. Many participating buildings are not normally open to the public. DOORS OPEN TORONTO creates access, heightens awareness and generates excitement about this city.
Saturday, May 29, selected areas of St. Lawrence Hall will be available for viewing and tours will be provided by the Citizens for the Old Town from their storefront office in the building (159 King Street East). As well, at The Market Gallery, there will be presentations and tours of the 3rd floor vault. No events or tours on Sunday, May 30, but the Market Gallery is open as usual.
No pre-registration or tickets required. For more information:
Toronto was the first city in North America to launch this prestigious event dedicated to built heritage, architecture and design. Developed as a millennium project in 2000, DOORS OPEN TORONTO attracted over 70,000 visitors to 96 buildings throughout the City of Toronto in its first year.
The inspiration for DOORS OPEN TORONTO came from Europe, where over 40 countries participate every September during European Heritage Month. Glasgow was the first U.K. city to launch its Doors Open Day program over a decade ago. Sydney, Australia and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil launched their own Doors Open programs.
In 2002, building on the successful Toronto model, the Ontario Heritage Foundation launched Doors Open Ontario running from April to October. In 2003 over 130 communities, participating in 27 events will open sites of historical, architectural or natural significance throughout the province. Visit Doors Open Ontario for program details.
