September 2007 at the Market
COMMFFEST
September 27-30 North Market (indoors & out)
COMMFFEST, the not-for-profit Community Film Festival, showcases a wide variety of local, national, and international films. Its main objective is to bring communities together to increase awareness and understanding that we are more alike than not. This year Commffest kicks off it’s third year by adding COMMFFEST 100. COMMFFEST 100 celebrates 100 of Toronto’s finest not-for-profit and charitable organizations, including film festivals, agencies and community groups under one roof, showcasing film art and community.

A special event in The Kitchen
ScotiaBank nuit blanche / BLACKNIGHT
An exhibition of artwork that celebrates the darkness of night
September 29, 7:03 p.m. to sunrise The Kitchen (South Market, West Mezzanine)
Rodney Bowers, chef and owner of “Rosebud” and “The Citizen,” voted Toronto’s hottest young chef, will craft a menu devoted entirely black food. His performance will be shot on video and projected onto the window facing Front Street.
Melatonin: Marx Kruis and Sean Searls will perform extended durational pieces inspired by the night on amplified guitar, bass and flute.
Tomas Begin's kinetic sound and light sculpture suggests the orbits of planets, mirroring the rotation of the earth into darkness.
Chang Wanwee will exhibit Blackhole, a video projection referring to the cosmos and processes of digestion. Complementing Bower’s culinary production, Wanwee questions the impenetrability of darkness and the body.
Anders Oinonen will screen a video piece titled Blackout, inspired by the several-day blackout that hit the Eastern Seaboard.
Relief Sculpture by Susy Oliveira
Mike Murphy exhibits paintings from his “Darkstar” series.
Comfort Station: 12 cots will be available to tired guests. Sleeping audience members become objects of vulnerability.
Market fog: the floor of the market will be enveloped in a fog illuminated by strobe lights which phase in and out. Viewed from above in The Kitchen, the St Lawrence Market appears in a completely different light.
