September 1999 at the Market

Globe with Roots!
Global Roots
A Festival of Food, Dance, Music and Life
September 23-25, 1999

Toronto has possibly the richest diversity of cultural representation in the world. The Global Roots Festival aims to nurture world traditions through a three-day celebration of food, dance and music. Individuals and communities from all over Toronto are coming to the St. Lawrence Market Neighbourhood from September 23 to 25 for a sensory feast. Don't miss it!

Taste of the Market & Foods of the World
The Festival kicks off the first day of Fall, the Autumnal Equinox, a time of harvest, reaping the fruits and gifts of this earth. Delicious specialty food stands from all over the world will flood the St. Lawrence Market out onto the streets. St. Lawrence Market Merchants will be offering samples of their multicultural wares for One Ontario Doller a plate. Ten percent of all Toronto Dollar revenues raised through this even will go towards sponsorship of after-school dance classes for Toronto youth. Come dabble in tasty samples, stay for a cross-cultural lunch, or place your orders for Thanksgiving.

Contra Dancing* at Global Roots
Come and dance to Footnotes, one of Toronto's newsest, hottest contra bands. If you can walk, you can contra dance! No experience or partner needed.

North St. Lawrence Market (Jarvis & Front Streets)
Thursday, September 23, 1999   7:30 -- 9:30 p.m.
Admission FREE
Sponsored by TORONTO COUNTRY DANCERS.

* In contra dancing, dancers form "sets" of two parallel lines running the length of the hall and dance to traditional Scots-Irish or French Canadian music. Each dance is a sequence of moves similar to the figures in old-time square dancing. As a sequence is repeated, each pair of dancers progresses down the line, dancing with every other pair in the set. Each dance is taught by the caller before it is danced.

Dance, Dance and More Dance!
Global Roots presents a forum for local and guest artists to share their art and their cultural roots through perfomance and free open workshops. Everyone is invited to observe and explore for themselves the variety of ethnic and contemporary dance styles available right here in Toronto. There will be performances by established dance companies as well as by emerging artists. The Festival will also be holding evening street dances, where everyone is invited to come and dance up a storm.
