Ponesse Foods was one of the original produce vendors in the Market, there since 1900. The first owners’ name was Ponesse. Mario began working for him at 7 years old. He started learning the business by selling at the bargain table and dealing with the customers. He had to sweep up and keep the produce stocked and tidy. When he took over the business 20 years ago, he passed on this tradition to his sons who are learning the business from him.

Ponesse Foods carries on the Market tradition by selling top quality fruits and vegetables from their original location at the front of the building. They offer fresh local and imported produce, Italian chestnuts, imported mushrooms, tropical fruits, local and imported grapes. Their specialty is chocolate-dipped fresh strawberries, the only ones regularly available in the Market.
